“Paying attention to who is speaking was, you know, politically incorrect; the point was to listen to what people were saying. So, lots of people in those days engaged with feminism used pseudonyms or different names…when the name bell hooks is called, the spirit of my great-grandmother rises because it also had to do with how many of us were not able to name the female lineage that we came from.”

– bell hooks, The Last interview with Silas House

The Daak through this call for submissions, aims to expand beyond book reviews to publish research on key conceptual categories, methodological innovations, and pedagogical interventions by bell hooks in her life and through her writing. Her research and activism increased intersections within feminism, she brought conceptual clarity to questions of intersections, generational violence etc. This special issue will go beyond honouring her legacy to critically studying her life and her work. We want to honour, deliberate and write on hook’s pedagogy, methodology, activism, poetry, and writing.

A celebrated activist, scholar, teacher, and writer, the objective would be to try and engage with her life’s work. Her work made strides across disciplines, and we invite authors across disciplines to contribute to this issue. The Daak would be especially keen on pieces that discuss their key motif through the books and writings by bell hooks. The editors would like to but not limit the issue to the following themes:

1. Pedagogical resistance and intervention

2. Methodological innovation in research and academic writing

3. Inclusive Feminism: what it means to say feminism is for all

4. Love as a conceptual category

5. Engagement of Gender/Sexual Studies with ‘Love’

6. Love, Community and Transformation

7. Pop culture: power and resistance

8. What is in a name?

9. Finding the self during resistance and activism

Our objective is to increase scholarly engagement through both academic and non-academic writings including poetry. For any queries, please contact us at editor@thedaak.in. Please make your submissions at submissions@thedaak.in.
