About TheDaak Review

A book travels a long distance, from being conceived as an idea to being laid out as a story. Some lie dormant on the bookshelves until many months and even years later when they are finally picked. Some are read and re-read, others forgotten. Books are like letters: intimate messages from an author to a reader, from one mind to another. TheDaak Review is a space for receiving and sending such letters, a community of readers, writers, and thinkers brought together by their shared love for books and ideas.

We are a collective of students and young scholars at different stages of our academic journeys. Realising the central place of books in the world of ideas, we wanted to build a community that celebrates both the discipline and the delight of reading. TheDaak Review was born from the desire to restore the pleasure, curiosity, and creativity that often gets lost in the rigour of academic life.

What We Do

We began in 2023 as a book review journal, publishing original reviews across disciplines and genres. From the start, we sought to reimagine the form of the book review itself, encouraging writing that moves beyond summary to engage deeply, reflectively, and creatively with the world a book opens up.

Over time, we grew into a biannual academic journal that now includes reviews, explainers, commentaries, and research essays. Each issue is built around a central theme, bringing together diverse voices that explore the intersections across social sciences. Our double-blind peer review process ensures rigour, while our editorial approach values accessibility and creative thought.

Our Community

Beyond the journal, TheDaak has grown into a vibrant collective.

  • Through our Reading Groups, we meet every month to discuss a shared book, discovering new perspectives through conversation.
  • Our weekly Daak Baithak gathers scholars and writers from different fields to present ideas and initiate dialogue, bringing critical conversations to life.
  • And through TheDaak Weekly, we publish personal essays, topical reflections, and explainers that extend our conversations into the present moment.

Our Vision

At TheDaak Review, we see reading and writing as acts of connection. We hope to build a space where academic thought and creative reflection meet, where young thinkers exchange ideas freely, and where books continue to inspire new conversations.
